Description

This PowerPoint accompanies, and should be used in conjunction with GeoFactsheet 395. Making Sense of the IPCC Special Report: Impact, Adaptation and Required Mitigation at 1.5°C Warming.

In 1997, the goal of the Kyoto Protocol was to keep global warming below 2.0ºC APL. However, this target was increasingly criticised as being too high and the 2018 IPCC report considered capping global warming at 1.5ºC APL. The impact of this on people, ecosystems, ocean systems and sea level rise and the water and carbon cycles are discussed and compared to the impacts of a potential rise of 2.0ºC APL. Methods of adaptation and mitigation (both in terms of reducing current emissions and negative emissions) are considered.
