394. Why Do Volcanic Eruptions Result in Such a Wide Variety of Impacts?

Description

Volcanic eruptions ranging from Hawaiian to Plinian produce a great variety of impacts. Stratovolcanoes in particular exhibit a wide range of volcanic processes – for example, pyroclastic flows, lahars, gas emissions, phreatic eruptions, tephra bombs – and associated impacts also vary greatly. People’s response to risk varies according to time available to respond, attitudes, preparation and education, although evacuation can be disruptive in itself. This Geography Factsheet will use a number of case studies to examine the variety of volcanic impacts and their causes.
