Description

In 2016, more than 600,000 Muslim refugees, the Rohingya, fled from northern Myanmar into neighbouring Bangladesh. This is a story of persecution, the widespread burning of Rohingya villages, rape, murder and the abuse of human rights by the military and local Buddhist mobs.

In this Geography Factsheet we focus on the background to the crisis, analyse the reasons for the persecution of the Rohingya and chart the events of 2016. It analyses the impact of mass migration on both the source and reception areas. The Factsheet concludes with an evaluation of the international response to the crisis.
