Description

This Psychology Factsheet examines the influence of the media on addiction, especially the effect that it can have on its initiation. There is also a discussion about the strengths and limitations of the media as an explanation of addictive behaviour, and how this theory can be applied to bring about positive social changes. The Factsheet includes Exam Hints, and the worksheet gives you the opportunity to apply what you have learned to exam-style questions. Words in bold are explained in the glossary and there is a reference list at the end.

The examiner will expect you to be able to:

  • Describe the psychological theories which explain the possible link between the media and addiction.
  • Give examples of studies which support and refute these theories.
  • Evaluate the strengths and limitations of the role of the media as an explanation of addictive behaviour.
  • Describe practical, real-world applications of this theory.
