This Psychology Factsheet provides guidance about how to describe and evaluate the role played by the contact hypothesis in helping to reduce prejudice to satisfy the criteria set out by the exam boards. Words in bold are explained in the glossary and the worksheet provides an opportunity to practice what you have learned with exam-style questions. There is a reference list at the end.

The examiner expects you to be able to:

  • Show an understanding of what constitutes prejudice.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the contact hypothesis and how it may be used to reduce prejudice.
  • Use relevant research to support the points you make.
  • Evaluate this research by considering appropriate strengths and limitations.
  • Evaluate the usefulness and applicability of the contact hypothesis as a vehicle for reducing prejudice.
