Description

To succeed in this topic, you need to:
• Be familiar with the definition and occurrence of transition metals, their ions and complex ions in terms of charged particles interacting in an aqueous solution.
• Be familiar with (dative) coordinated covalent bonding, coordination numbers and the respective shapes formed, e.g. tetrahedral and octahedral.

After working through this Chemistry Factsheet, you will:
• Be aware of the colour chemistry involved for key examples of transition metals, e.g. vanadium, manganese, iron, nickel, cobalt and copper.
• Be able to distinguish and describe between the different types of reactions involving transition metal ion complexes, e.g. acid-base, redox reactions, precipitation reactions and ligand substitution reactions.
• Be able to complete ionic equations describing chemical reactions involving transition metal ions complexes.
