Description

Nigeria has the largest economy in Africa, almost exclusively as a result of the extraction of oil. The impacts of oil extraction, particularly in the Niger Delta region, have been significant. As a result of oil spills, there is vast amounts of environmental destruction. People who live in the oil rich regions suffer from this damage as a result of loss of farmland and fish stocks. Furthermore, local people do not share in the wealth generated by oil companies.

This Geography Factsheet discusses the impacts of oil extraction in the Niger Delta in detail and makes references to some specific incidents that have occurred in the region connected to oil extraction.
