Description

Mercury is released naturally into the environment from volcanoes and from rock weathering. Humans release mercury during mining operations but the biggest human source is coal burning. Human sources are estimated to release 2000 tonnes of mercury each year whilst natural emissions are estimated at 3000-4000 tonnes. This Environmental Studies Factsheet explains:
