This Chemistry Factsheet introduces the use of Latimer diagrams to illustrate a series of redox steps for a given species to enable the prediction of their redox behaviour, describes the reduction of chromium(VI) to chromium(II) as a measure of the energy required to reduce a substance from its most reactive form to its least reactive form, describes how Latimer diagrams are used to identify disproportionation reactions, and discusses Latimer diagrams along with Frost diagrams to describe the relative stability of different oxidation states.
