502. Is Building on the Green Belt the Solution to England’s Housing Crisis?

Description

This Geography Factsheet describes the current housing crisis in England, reviews the origins and purpose of green belts in England, assesses how successful they have been in meeting their primary objectives and shows how this success has contributed to the twin crises of housing affordability and shortages in metropolitan housing markets. It reports on the growing pressure to rethink the purpose of green belts and the government’s response to those pressures, analyses the opposition to the government’s proposals and the reasoning supporting that opposition, and proposes that some form of development will be allowed to proceed, asking the question: to what extent can building on green belt help to meet current and future housing needs? It concludes by suggesting that changes to green belt legislation are unavoidable.
