494. Garden Communities: Are They a Sustainable Solution to The Housing Crisis in England and Wales?

Description

Since 1945, the provision of sufficient, affordable housing has been regarded as a ‘problem’ for most governments. Various solutions have been tried, but sustainability has proved elusive — environmentally, economically, and socially.

This Geography Factsheet will briefly explain the background to the housing problem and give an overview of the housing experiments used to resolve it, evaluate the necessity of developing new homes in explicit community structures, determine the sustainability of garden community developments in general, and examine one case study — Culm Village in Mid Devon — and compare it with another location.
