267. Demographic Change and Development

Description

This Sociology Factsheet will look at the main arguments concerning global demographic change. It will explore competing sociological theories about population growth, in particular the link between population and poverty in the developing world. This Factsheet includes Exam Hints to help you achieve maximum marks, while the Activities give you the opportunity to apply what you have learned and develop your skills in this area. Sociology terms in bold are explained in the Glossary and a reference list is included at the end of the Factsheet.

The examiner will expect you to be able to:

  • Describe the main patterns of global demographic change.
  • Begin to consider the problems caused by rapid population growth in the developing world.
  • Explain, analyse and compare theoretical explanations for the relationship between demographic change and development: Malthusian and neo-Malthusian modernisation theory, and anti-Malthusian views including dependency theory.
