352. Coordination Numbers and Isomerism in d-Block Metal Complexes

Description

To succeed in this topic, you need to:

  • Be familiar with complex ions consisting of metal ions that have formed coordinate dative-covalent bonds by ligands donating an electron lone-pair to the central metal ion.
  • Be familiar with the shapes of chemical species that are determined by the number of electron-pairs around a central atom or ion (valance electron-pair repulsion theory).
  • Be familiar with nomenclature rules defined by the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Allied Chemistry).

After working through this Chemistry Factsheet, you will:

  • Be able to describe coordination numbers and co-ordinate bonds in the context of transition metal complexes.
  • Be able to describe how coordination numbers influence the shape and the isomerism of complex ions.
  • Be able to name complex ions.
