Description

This Psychology Factsheet examines the British Psychological Society’s (BPS) guidelines which govern animal experimentation in psychological research. It examines the historical context that has made such guidelines necessary, the guidance provided by the BPS for psychologists working with animals, and the strengths and limitations of these guidelines. It includes Exam Hints, and the Worksheet gives you the opportunity to apply what you have learned to exam style questions. Psychology terms in bold are explained in the Glossary and a reference list is included to encourage further reading.

The examiner will expect you to be able to:

  • Discuss the factors which make animal experimentation an ethical issue within psychology, and why the BPS guidelines are necessary.
  • Understand how the BPS guidelines link with animal rights legislation.
  • Apply BPS guidelines to psychological experiments involving animals.
  • Evaluate the strengths and limitations of BPS guidelines.
