221. Are There Still Boys’ Jobs and Girls’ Jobs in Modern British Homes?

This Sociology Factsheet will look at the domestic division of labour within the modern home - what jobs are performed by males and what jobs are performed by females? It will also explore how the attitudes towards these roles have changed and how the allocation of jobs within the homes have changed. The Factsheet includes Exam Hints to help you to use your knowledge to gain maximum marks, while the activities give you the opportunity to apply what you have learned and will help you develop your skills in this area.

Words in bold are explained in the glossary and a reference list is included at the end of the Factsheet.

The examiner will expect you to be able to:

  1. Demonstrate your understanding of the current domestic division of labour within the home.
  2. Demonstrate your understanding of the trends in attitude and behaviour – have the attitudes towards gendered roles changed and have jobs performed by males and females within the home changed?
  3. Effectively use evidence to support the changes.
  4. Incorporate your own analysis of the domestic division of labour in an answer on conjugal roles within the family.
