215. Theories of Stratification

Description

This Sociology Factsheet will look at the different theories of stratification and explore where the differences and inequalities stem from, whether class, gender or ethnicity. The Factsheet includes Exam Hints to help you to use your knowledge to gain maximum marks, while the activities give you the opportunity to apply what you have learned and will help you develop your skills in this area.

Words in bold are explained in the glossary and a reference list is included at the end of the Factsheet.

The examiner will expect you to be able to:
Demonstrate your understanding of the different theories of stratification, and where the inequalities stem from (e.g. class, gender or ethnicity, or elsewhere).
Demonstrate your understanding of whether theories are based on consensus or conflict.
Critically evaluate the different theories, by looking for strengths and weaknesses.
Incorporate your own analysis of the different theories in an answer on Stratification & Differentiation.
