This Sociology Factsheet will look at institutional racism within the education system and how this factor can explain ethnic differences in educational achievement. The Factsheet includes Exam Hints to help you demonstrate your knowledge effectively and incorporate creditworthy points into your responses. The Activities give you the opportunity to apply what you have learned and develop your understanding of this area.

The examiner will expect you to be able to:
• Demonstrate your understanding of what institutional racism is and how it differs from individual racism.
• Explain examples of institutional racism within the education system.
• Explain the impact institutional racism has on the performance of ethnic minority pupils.
• Use appropriate and relevant sociological language to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding.
• Evaluate the impact institutional racism has and the extent to which it can explain ethnic differences in educational achievement, alongside other factors.
