214. How Ethnicity Shapes Identity

Description

This Sociology Factsheet will look at how ethnicity shapes identity and will explore the extent to which it is still an important factor of identity formation. The Factsheet includes Exam Hints to help you to use your knowledge to gain maximum marks, while the activities give you the opportunity to apply what you have learned and will help you develop your skills in this area.

Words in bold are explained in the glossary and a reference list is included at the end of the Factsheet.

The examiner will expect you to be able to:
Demonstrate your understanding of both identity and ethnic identity.
Demonstrate your understanding of how both primary and secondary socialisation facilitates ethnic identity.
Demonstrate an understanding of how different minority ethnic groups form an identity.
Critically evaluate differing theories and research on how ethnicity shapes identity.
Be confident in incorporating ethnicity in an answer on culture & identity.
