This Sociology Factsheet will look at whether there is a British identity crisis, what constitutes a British identity and any factors that define it, with examples, case studies and research. The Factsheet includes Exam Hints to help you to use your knowledge to gain maximum marks, while the Activities give you the opportunity to apply what you have learned and will help you develop your skills in this area.

Words in bold are explained in the glossary and a reference list is included at the end of the Factsheet.

The examiner will expect you to be able to:

Demonstrate your understanding of the processes of cultural transmission, and socialisation.
Demonstrate your understanding of how these processes facilitate identity formation and specifically a British identity, and whether it is in crisis.
Be confident in incorporating contemporary examples and illustrations in an exam response.
