This Psychology Factsheet provides an overview of psychological and biological methods for treating addiction with a specific focus on addiction to substances. The Factsheet includes examiner comments and the worksheet gives you the opportunity to apply what you have learned to exam style questions. Words in bold are explained in the glossary.

The examiner will expect you to be able to:
• Define addiction including the terms dependence, tolerance and withdrawal.
• Describe theories of change (e.g. Transtheoretical model).
• Explain psychological treatment for substance addiction including behavioural interventions and cognitive behaviour therapies and group therapy.
• Explain biological treatments for substance addiction including types of drug therapy.
• Evaluate psychological and biological treatments for substance addiction with reference to research.
