37. The Widening Gap Between Rich and Poor

Description

This Sociology Factsheet summarises the debate about the gap that exists between the rich and poor in Britain. Divisions between the social classes were once a particular concern in sociology, although in recent decades, this concern has been more subdued, with the focus changing towards gender, ethnicity and age. The reasons for this include the idea that we are now living in a classless society.

This Factsheet considers the notion of a classless Britain, and also challenges this idea, bringing to light some of the most recent evidence and arguments. It also considers how it is not just social class that needs to be considered when studying divisions in society.
