298. Metabolism: Chemical Reactions in Living Organisms

Description

To succeed in this topic, you need to:
Be familiar with describing enthalpy changes during chemical reactions.
Be familiar with organic nomenclature and displaying organic compounds.
Be familiar with oxidation/reduction reactions, condensation and hydrolysis reactions.

After working through this Chemistry Factsheet, you will:

Be aware that metabolism describes chemical reactions in cells, e.g. photosynthesis and glycolysis.
Be able to describe energy changes in metabolic process in terms of exergonic and endergonic reactions, and how these relate to Free Energy.
Be aware of different oxidation/reductions steps involved in key metabolic processes, such as the Calvin cycle and Krebs cycle.
