336. Trends and Patterns

Description

To succeed in this topic, you need to:

  • Be familiar with the periodic table and the ordered arrangement of elements in groups and periods.
  • Be familiar with the atomic structure of atoms and the significance of valence electrons (electrons occupying the outer electron shell).
  • Be familiar with the different physical and chemical properties observed in metals and non-metals.

After working through this Chemistry Factsheet, you will:

  • Be able to describe the trends and patterns observed on the periodic table in properties in terms of electron configuration.
  • Be able to describe the trends and patterns observed on the periodic table in properties in terms of bonding and structure.
  • Be able to describes the reactions of elements in periods 2 and 3, with oxygen, chlorine and water.
