Description

Here is an extract from a recent Chief Examiner’s report on candidate’s efforts on an ecology sampling question:

“Candidates showed little evidence of having actually carried out fieldwork. Few were able to explain how to obtain a measure of the percentage cover. Similarly, species frequency was not well understood”.

Practical ecological techniques frequently appear in exam questions but many candidates have not had much opportunity to actually get out there and measure things. This Environmental Studies Factsheet sets out the basic approaches to recording plant diversity and summarises recent exam questions on this topic.

This Factsheet explains:
• Percentage cover.
• Species frequency and density.
