This Sociology Factsheet will look at whether science has displaced religion. It will examine both religion and science and discuss the extent they can explain the world today. It will consider the extent of religious change and whether religion has been displaced by science.

The Factsheet includes Exam Hints to help you to use your knowledge to gain maximum marks, while the activities give you the opportunity to apply what you have learned and will help you develop your skills in this area.

Words in bold are explained in the glossary and a reference list is included at the end of the Factsheet.

The examiner will expect you to be able to:

Demonstrate your understanding of the importance of religious beliefs in contemporary society.
Demonstrate your understanding of the importance of scientific beliefs in contemporary society.
Explain how and why religious and scientific beliefs have changed in Britain.
Demonstrate your understanding of the debate over the importance of religion and science in contemporary society.
Evaluate the evidence for both sides of this debate.
