329. Fermentation

Description

To succeed in this topic, you need to:

  • Be familiar with the reaction of yeast on sugars to produce ethanol.
  • Be familiar with the development of renewable bio-sourced resources to replace crude oil products.
  • Be familiar with the representation of organic molecules and their use in chemical equations.

After working through this Chemistry Factsheet, you will:

  • Be able to describe fermentation in terms of producing energy anaerobically.
  • Be able to describe metabolic reactions involving enzymes to produce energy from glucose molecules via glycolysis.
  • Be able to outline different variations used in industrial fermentation processes.
  • Be able to describe examples of fermentation of produce different alcohols for use as biofuels and in the use production of polylactide (PLA).
