334. Extracting Copper

Description

To succeed in this topic, you need to:

  • Be familiar with simple oxidation-reduction (REDOX) reactions and writing REDOX equations.
  • Be familiar with processes for extracting metals from their ores, e.g. using heat, using electricity.
  • Be familiar with electrolysis and electrochemical cells.

After working through this Chemistry Factsheet, you will:

  • Be able to describe the processes used to extract copper from copper-bearing ores, including: froth flotation, smelting, leaching and biomining.
  • Be able to describe electrolytic refining processes used to obtain high copper purity.
  • Be able to write chemical equations describing the different REDOX processes describing the extraction and purification of copper.
