Description

This Sociology Factsheet examines three main sources of statistics about the extent of crime which are used by sociologists:
• Official crime statistics.
• Statistics from victim surveys.
• Statistics from self-report surveys.

It also examines the way in which different sociological perspectives have interpreted crime statistics in particular the following approaches:
• Positivism.
• Social constructivism.
• Realism.
