This Factsheet outlines what health promotion is, ways of promoting health and explaining health behaviours.

    1. What is health promotion?

    (a) Health promotion refers to methods which aim to enhance and maximise health. Health promotions try to teach people what the healthy behaviours are and how to perform them, as well as persuade them to stop any unhealthy behaviours.

    (b) Primary prevention is concerned with actions undertaken to avoid health problems before they occur, rather than with promoting change for those who are already ill/injured. For example, in aiming to improve diet, primary prevention might include public health reminders on the TV to eat at least five portions fruit and vegetables a day and campaigns at school teaching children about healthy eating.
