    What is experimental design?

Experimental design is the process by which a researcher decides whether the different conditions in an experiment are to be experienced by different groups of participants or by the same group of participants. For example, an experiment to investigate whether drug A makes you more sleepy than drug B would require two different groups of participants.Group 1 would receive drug A and Group 2 would receive drug B. (There would also probably be a control group who would receive neither drug A nor drug B.) The same participants could not be used as there would possibly be a carry- over effect from drug A to drug B or even a possible interaction between the two drugs. (Likewise, if you wanted to investigate differences between males and females you would need different groups of participants!)
